Programme of Speakers 2025

March 19th – Sandy Halstead – ‘Beekeeping

Sandy, a member of Cothi Gardeners’ Club, is the current President and Apiary Manager of Lampeter and District Beekeepers’ Association. Her talk is bound to be informative and entertaining.

April 16th – Nigel McCall – ‘Aberglasney: A Calendar Year

Nigel McCall’s first ever book, ‘Aberglasney Gardens, a Calendar Year’ features his beautiful photographs of the Gardens through the seasons.

The 168-page hardback book, printed and bound by Gomer Press, includes almost 250 colourful photographs of the Gardens throughout the seasons, with plant identification captions by Aberglasney’s Head Gardener, Joseph Atkin. The book’s foreword has been written by Chris Beardshaw.

Nigel will be bringing copies of his book for members to purchase.

May 21st – Paula Davies – ‘The House on Stilts

Paula’s ⅓ acre garden, with views across the Towy estury to Llansteffan, surrounds a mid-century modern house. It is a garden open under the NGS Yellow Book scheme and designed with an artist’s eye, subtle colour palette and use of form and texture. It provides a mosaic of different habitats for wildlife, from a large pond at the rear to a dry cockle shell garden to the front, and steps to viewing platforms at different levels. There is an emphasis on promoting biodiversity and sustainable practices, whilst creating a relaxing space for people.

June 18th – Mair Evans – ‘Pelargoniums and Geraniums

Mair is a member of the Cothi Gardeners Club and has particular expertise in Pelargoniums and Geraniums to share with us. Mair will be bringing plants for sale.

July 16th – Juliet Edgar – Printing Workshop

As a mixed media artist, Juliet is fascinated by experimental processes, where the outcome is unknown & often a very lovely surprise. Juliet recently returned to creating – plants, macrame, eco-printing & painting – after more than a 30 year break. Juliet loves nature, observing the wonder of plants, mosses, fungi & the tiny details of colour, texture & form alongside the huge expanse of landscape, sky, sea and clouds. She is fortunate to live in a magical part of West Wales with everything you could want for inspiration as an artist is on your doorstep.

Juliet also runs workshops under the banner of ‘Mud and Wool Creative Escapes’.

August 20th – Summer Social – ‘Pizza and Plants’

If you haven’t tried the food at ‘The Plough’ in Felingwm, you are missing a real treat. Not only will we be sharing the most delicious pizzas, but we will also be treated to a talk by Joseph Atkin, the former head gardener at Aberglasney Gardens.

September 17th

An opportunity to reflect on our gardening year, so far. ‘ The good, the bad and the downright ugly.’ What has been successful in our gardens, what has disappointed and what is best forgotten?

Which  garden club talks, activities etc have we enjoyed the most?

Ideas to help future planning for the next programme organiser.

Members are invited to bring nibbles to share and the committee will supply some extra drink options in addition to the usual tea and coffee (but not gin, unfortunately!) .

October 15th – Robert Wallis – ‘Fritillaries on Four Continents

Bob and Rannveig Wallis are well known for their amazing collection of bulbs and their garden, ‘ Llwyn Ifan’, in Carmarthenshire..  They are seasoned travellers and plant hunters and successful exhibitors for the Alpine Society Shows.

November 19th – Online Talk – ‘The Winter Garden at St Timothee‘

As usual, we will be showing an online presentation as weather can be so tricky at this time of year.  Currently, ‘The Winter Garden at St Timothee’ – an online talk from the NGS – is the plan but if anyone has a preference for something else, please let Carol Carpenter know at the September meeting.

December 17th – Christmas Social – Seasonal Buffet at The Dolaucothi Arms

Time and cost TBA.
